March 29, 2010 Leave a comment

Saw this upcoming track day on a car forum.

Where – Willow Springs Horse Thief Mile – This is a 1.1 mile tight road course similar to driving a mountain road. There are switchbacks and lots of elevation changes. It is both a fun and challenging course. There are many safe areas to test the limits of your ability. This will not be a drift event. There will be a full safety and flag crew on site for the entire day. Sessions will last 20-25 minutes and alternate between the two run groups.

When – Friday, April 23, 2010. From 8AM to 5PM.

How Much – $150 for almost 4 hours of track time. There will be only a maximum of 30 open spots, divided into 2 run groups, based on skill level and amount of people attending.

NRG Hood Dampers Review

March 23, 2010 Leave a comment

What’s a hood damper? It’s a pneumatic strut that props open your hood. Most high-end cars have these installed instead of the cheapo metal rod that you slide into a hole under the hood. I purchased a pair of NRG stainless steel hood dampers for my Subaru STi. It included all of the necessary hardware for install. The installation was quick and simple with basic hand tools. These have been installed in my car since February 2006 and they still function well.

Will Brake Override Ruin Your Track Day?

March 15, 2010 Leave a comment

With all of these Toyota Prius cars running out of control, there is more awareness of the brake override feature. New car shoppers that like to left foot brake or heel toe shift should check if the car has brake override. Here is an interesting article from Consumer Reports on testing the thresholds of brake override technology in some newer cars. I agree with one of the comments of omitting it from manual transmission cars. There are too many nanny devices built-in today’s cars that can dull the experience for a performance driver.

I wanted to practice taking photos of cars on the track. My friend and I headed out to Willow Springs International Raceway to spectate the Speedventures HPDE there today. We camped out at the top of the omega section and started taking shots in the chilly wind. Here are some of my favorite shots.

Instructor Fatality During HPDE

March 11, 2010 1 comment

My condolences to Tom Norby’s family and friends. I have a lot of respect for any instructor that rides in a car on a race track with someone else at the wheel. It is their instruction and passion that gets more people into this sport.

If anyone has the accident report on what actually happened, please leave a comment.

Found this cool slow motion capture of a Porsche race car hitting the berm on a turn. A Vision Research Phantom camera shot it at 500 frames per second.

Performance Friction Z-Rated Brake Pads Review

March 2, 2010 4 comments

I recently had to replace my front and rear street brake pads on my 2005 Subaru STi. I could not afford race pads and separate street pads so I looked for one set that could do both. They should run decently on the track while giving me cold and non-squealing stops. While shopping online I discovered the Performance Friction Z-Rated brake pads. These brake pads are targeted for performance vehicles such as BMW and Corvette.
